European –
European hair can only be found on the market in very small quantities, because so few European women are prepared to sell their hair to extensions companies. It is also necessary for their hair to have never been chemically treated, narrowing the market even further.
Chinese-Even though Chinese hair is available in greater quantities, it is not compatible with European hair. Its round cross-section differs from the oval shape of European hair, making it too thick and rigid. To thin it out, it must undergo an acid process which completely destroys the cuticle layer. The hair is then covered with silicon which gives it a healthy look, but this protection has a short life span. After a few washes the silicone layer starts to wash away and the hair becomes dull and brittle again.
Great Lengths uses only the highest quality Remy hair direct from Indian temples. Remy hair is a process of bundling strands of human hair so that the roots of the hair are at one end and the tip of the hair is at the opposite end. In being collected in this way the cuticle of the hair lies in the same direction as it does on your head, avoiding tangling which is common in non-remy hair bundling when the cuticle of two or more individual hairs catch against each other.

Brushed hair is one example of non-Remy hair. Bushed hair is collected from salon floors and hair brushes from hundreds of thousands of Indian women. It is often, hair of different lengths, thickness and color. This method of collection results in balls of yarn where the hair lies unorganized in all directions It is easy to tangle and unsuitable for quality hair extensions.
When non- remy hair is used for hair extensions, it is necessary to submit it to an aggresive acid treatment to strip it of its cuticle layer and prevent it from tangling. This process leaves the hair opaque and fragile, much like overstressed hair that has been bleached and coloured extensively. In order for companies to sell this hair for hair extensions it is covered with a silicon layer which gives it a healthy shiny look. but this protection has a short life, usually lasting only several weeks with regular washing. Once this layer of silicon is washed away the hair again becomes dull and brittle resulting in matting and discomfort.
