Great Lengths ‘Double Drawn’ Hair Extensions

You may have heard the term “double drawn“ around hair extensions, but many people wrongly assume this means that the hair is put through the hackles (beds of nails) twice to comb it out.  This is not correct. Double drawn is a process to remove all the shorter bits from the hair so that the volume at the root is the same as at the ends.

The Double Drawn Test

While there’s a lot of ways hair extension companies can hide non-remy hair or coat hair in silicones so that it’s poor quality is masked there is a way to tell if your extensions are double drawn.

  1. Hold the hair between your two hands, one hand on the root, one on the ends, horizontally.
  2. Shake it gently and watch for shorter pieces of hair to fall down
  3. If there’s shorter pieces of hair, that hair cannot be double drawn

How Great Lengths Hair is Double Drawn

When our donor hair comes from India is sorted depending on length, and this is the first drawing process. The second draw comes nearly at the very end of the preparation of the hair extension.  After the hair is coloured and smoothed, but before it’s attached to the bonds, it is laid between two beds of Velcro. By hand, Great Lengths employees use a blade and pull the shorter bits out, sorting them into piles creating the different lengths- 30cm, 40 cm and so on.

Double Drawn Hair Means Volume

Double drawn hair means that you will have the same density at the root as at the ends. This is incredibly important for anyone who wants more volume and it additionally gives the look of luscious, healthy hair.
